Fortezza Coffee is an independent specialty coffee shop and cafe at 819 S Calhoun St, downtown Fort Wayne. Espresso drinks, pastries, and a brunch and breakfast menu. It opened in April 2014 and has been running there since.

The Building Came First

The address is the Strauss Building, and according to a local history writeup by Young Leaders of Northeast Indiana, it went up in 1890. That same account notes that when the cafe space was built out, the original ceiling and the brick walls were preserved rather than covered over.

This is the sort of thing that photographs poorly and lands in person. Old brick has a texture that drywall cannot fake and a color that paint cannot match. The Journal Gazette has reported that Fortezza was among the first coffee shops in Indiana to make that install.

The practical result is a sightline. You watch the drink get made, and the barista can see you while making it, which is not how most coffee bars are arranged. A conventional espresso machine is a wall with a person hiding behind it. Whatever else the choice was about, it changed the geometry of the transaction, and the geometry is what you actually feel when you walk up to order.
